The Role of an Interpreter in the Public Sector

17th Mar 2014

Public Sector organisations including the NHS, Police, Central and Local Government regularly require credible, secure solutions for the support of non-English speakers.

Skilled Interpreters handle a full range of translation and interpreting services, including document and website translation, face-to-face interpreting, telephone interpreting, British Sign Language (BSL) and the specialist ‘hands-on interpreting’ for the blind and deaf.

Public Sector organisations have a growing requirement to communicate via the written word with a multicultural and multilingual audience to all service users. Highly experienced translators are therefore needed to translate a range of documentation including legal documents, medical records, discharge summaries, contracts, licenses, end user agreements, housing contracts and benefit forms.

Medical professionals also have an increasing requirement for access to a speedy reliable interpreting service. More often, this is the reassuring presence of a face-to-face medically qualified interpreter at a hospital, GP or dentist appointment.  Face-to-face interpreting by medically trained linguists provides the vital communication between patients with limited English and health care professionals; this is essential in the provision of the correct treatment and procedures. Accuracy, clarity and confidentiality is paramount during medical interpreting and  highly professional, native speakers accustomed to working in stressful and emotive circumstances who will be sympathetic to the needs of the patient.

Do not forget that the role of a translator/interpreter is that of an impartial mediator who facilitates communication between people who could not otherwise understand each other. If you decide to take up the challenge, you will have to understand the needs of both the service user (who can generally read/speak very little or no English) and the service provider (e.g. GP, immigration advisor, solicitor) so as to act in a professional manner at all times.
