Spanish: one of the most widely spoken languages in the world!

4th Oct 2013

In a globalized world like ours, the ability to speak foreign languages is gaining more and more importance every day. Therefore, in order to adapt to this challenging reality, it’s vital to start learning a new language.

Everybody knows that English is the world language of the present and the future. But other languages are also increasing in the number of speakers.

When thinking about learning a new language, why not start with Spanish?

The Spanish language is the most widely spoken Romance language, both in terms of number of speakers and the number of countries in which it is the dominant language.

Here are some facts regarding the importance of the Spanish language:

-          Approximately 406 million people speak Spanish as a native language, making it second only to Mandarin in terms of itsnumber of native speakers  worldwide. It also has 60 million speakers as a second language and 20 million students as a foreign language.

-          Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and is used as an official language by the European Union and Mercosur.

-          Spanish, the official language in twenty-one countries, is the third most widely-spoken language in the world, after English and Mandarin.

-          Experts predict that by the year 2050, there will be 530 million Spanish speakers.

Depending on your country of origin, you can find it easier or harder to learn Spanish. For example, Portuguese and Italians will learn Spanish with fewer difficulties as the similarities between languages are high.

In general, for an English native speaker Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn with only ten vowel/dipthong sounds (English has 20!). The orthography is clear and simple; words are written as they are pronounced, which makes reading easier. Grammatically, Spanish has fewer irregularities than other romance languages too.
