Simultaneous Interpreting Service Made Easy

30th Aug 2013

Who is a simultaneous interpreter?

In simple terms, a simultaneous interpreter is someone who interprets for someone in another language while the speaker speaks without interruption. In other words, this type of interpretation is where a speaker is giving their speech while an interpreter verbally transforms the words into another language in real-time. The person interpreting the speech may be sitting in a sound-proof booth equipped with microphones and headsets.

How does it really work?

It is a very complex process as simultaneous interpretation is a highly specialized area of translation, which requires accurate and complete translation, orally and at the same rate of speech as the speaker, with only a few seconds of lag time. It is not only about the deep knowledge of both languages, it is a matter of understanding the thought expressed in one language, and then explaining it using the resources of another language. In other words, what an interpreter does is change words into meaning, and then change meaning back into words - of a different language. This is why making sure that the interpreter is knowledgeable in the subject matter of the conference or the workshop they are interpreting is extremely important.

Simultaneous interpreters are bilingual by definition – but as explained above just being bilingual isn’t enough. Professional interpreters invest years in training and practice to reach the standards we require. At Pearl, we understand the importance of providing a quality Simultaneous Interpreting service and therefore all of our interpreters hold qualifications in interpreting and even further qualifications in their specific field such as Financial, Medical, Legal, etc. They are all fully trained in specific areas of Simultaneous Interpreting such as Medical, Pharmaceutical, etc. and all hold an enhanced CRB check.

When do you need a simultaneous interpreter?

You need a simultaneous interpreter when at least one person attending your event cannot understand what the speaker says, due to the fact that he speaks a different language, and there is no time or opportunity to let the speaker pause regularly.Simultaneous interpreters render one spoken language into another – instantly, allowing multi-lingual conferences to flow as smoothly and quickly as if they were in a single language. Simultaneous interpretation is the only way to ensure speakers of many different languages can understand and participate fully.

Pearl can provide you with the full package for your event. We will set up the equipment the evening before your event, provide an onsite engineer for the duration and dismantle once your event is complete. Small meeting or guided tours? No problem. Pearl can provide portable Simultaneous Interpreting equipment too.
